Lego investing sales 2022, which sets made the most money?
In 2020 I started a new little side hustle to help grow my money, a novel one, one that swoops under the radar and may even be scoffed at, but one that makes it possible to double your money…. Lego, yep Lego.
I buy lego discounted when on the market and wait for it to retire, then when demand outweighs supply, sell for a very nice tidy profit. This novel little investing method has recently been written about in, the times newspaper and is becoming bigger and bigger. It’s very easy to get started not difficult to get the basics and is a great way to grow your income through Lego investing 2022 was a very profitable year hitting £900 profit.
Why it works
Lego is often collectable and always popular, combining these mean they are very well sought after even when they have retired, the more sought after the more people will be prepared to pay. Buying at a good discount and then having the patience to wait ensures a good return on investment, not a get-rich-quick scheme you may need to wait two years or more. But the savvier you are with the purchases the more likely the excellent profit. There are some that I have bought that I bought way too early on in the cycle a few that have not done very well at all, but all this has been a good learning curve to highlight what is a good buy. Barring one noticeable exemption I have made a very good profit on all of the sets I bought. The target is 100% ROI some have dipped a little below some have far exceeded.
What am I looking for when buying Lego?
Simple three things
- A good discount
- A popular and collectable set
- Ideally close to retiring
Where do I sell my Lego?
So although have sold a few sets on eBay primarily I sell on Amazon, this was fairly easy to set up but did take some work but free for the account the only cost was a very small fee on buying some wholesale products to be able to sell Lego, if serious about this game you should get your Amazon seller account set up first before doing it.
All the sets I sold in 2022 and the profit margins
Time for the fun bit, the Lego investing 2022 report, every single set included clearly detailing the profit. All fees and expenditures have been included in every set so this all shows a clear profit.
In 2022 I made over £900 profit on the Lego that I sold, this is after all fees, postage amazon fees etc and of course the purchase price.
Lego Harry potter sets
3 for £18.49 (47% off) 3 for £23.50 (32% off)
Sold £55 (120% profit) Sold for £63 (108% profit)
This Lego set I always knew was going to do well, it was always extremely popular clear from the best sellers’ rankings on Amazon and the fact the price increased when amazon was out of stock.
Also, the discount available on the set was very good as well, anything at 30-40% for harry potter sets is always worth considering.
In a year I have more than doubled my money, and had I been patient and sold right up in the run-up to Christmas could have sold for even more, but the earlier sale allowed for buying different discounted sets.
Lego City 2022 Sales
Lego 60251 city monster truck RRP: £8.99Buy price £4.50

Half-price lego is pretty much always worth a buy and this popular Lego city set were well worth selling for double the RRP netting a very tasty profit per set for this more than doubling our money.
Lego 60305 City car transporter RRP: £24.99
Buy price £12.50
Sale price £37/£33 Profit – 99% profit 69% profit
This one I think had I been more patient I could have made even more as was pushing £43 in q4 and I sold a lot earlier, but at the time wanted the money to be able to invest in some more sets
This set we picked up in 2021 in Tesco around easter time where there are always some amazing club card discounts on a couple of Lego items, An early buy but an excellent one.
Lego 60285 Sports car RRP: £8.99

Sale price £12.50 Profit – 50%
Sold one of these that had lingering around not the margin we wanted but think probably stuck it into a box that needed filling. Again price now is about £16 6 months later so could have hit the target with patience.
Lego 60226 Mars space shuttle RRP £24.99Buy price £16.50
Sell price £40 Profit 80%
This was one of the first lego sets bought and was happy with the profit of 80% at the time. Again there was probably more available if held for a few more months.
But the excellent price at the beginning of the year was less confident about the lego city sets but they have performed extremely well. Effectively if it is popular when on the market you have a very clear indication it will do very well in retirement.

My surprise at the performance of Lego city sets is never more seen than in this set which I had a fair few off, they were half price in the supermarket and sold well middle of the year at 3 times the price I paid for them
The thing that got me with this set is I walked past these shelves so many times and didn’t buy them I could have had an absolute hat full but just didn’t see it as performing well.
Lego speed champions

Another set that doubled money on and again at half price was a no-brainer this set, speed champions Lego always performs well and this was no exception. Very happy with the profit here – if you look at Amazon now you are seeing it go for £60+
Lego 76896 Nissan GTR RRP: £17.99Buy price £12.36
Sale price: £39 Profit: 135% profit
Speed champions is always a good buy and this was another great example. They are always sought-after sets as are collectable and appeal to adults and kids.
This was a set bought very early on in investment times, at a lower discount than the others. But as this sale and others show don’t always need 40-50% off to get a great return.
Lego friends
Lego 41422 Panda tree house RRP: £25..00Buy price £12.50
Sale price: £34.00 Profit – 78%
This was another set that bought at Tesco at half price bought quite a few of these, didn’t do as well as the transporter but 80% return I was damn happy with them. Probably could have eeked a couple of quid out but not much.
Friends is a popular theme however but perhaps not as surefire as some others.
Lego Creator

This little set again at a half price could not go wrong, did very well and flew out of the shelves.
Lego star wars

Star wars is another theme that is very collectable and this one did extremely well with a good discount this set flew above its RRP and we had a cracking profit from each set that we sold.
Lego Marvel 2022 Sales

Another set that managed to pick up for half price.
Always worth checking supermarket clearances – snapped this up a couple of months before retirement and then a couple of months later was selling for a high markup after fees.
The only regret is that I hadn’t gotten more, but posted about other similar sets will be on the hunt for in 2022.
Not as grand a profit as would have expected from these sets that were retired for some time when sold but still not a bad return at all.

Lego Ninjago
Ninjago is not something I know much about so when first bought was a very blind buy, but they performed very well, and it is the same rules as any other set if it is popular it is likely to do well and we know now from the them that ninjago will also do well.
The sets that I sold this year did equally well in 2022 to make some very nice profit.
When the discounts are as good as these two as was the case, then it is extremeley easy to ensure get the return we are looking for.

Lessons of the year: Never buy Lego movie
Lego 70824 – NEVER BUY LEGO MOVIE –
In my naive young days found what thought would be an absolutely stonking discount on some Lego sets, this was probably on the 4th or 5th set we bought. Some research after (fatal error) discovered that maybe the Lego movie wasn’t very popular
We lost a couple of quid per set on this and donated the others. A lesson learned and a valuable one.
It is very hard to lose money investing on Lego but found a way on this set for less than £20 lost in total however.So anyone looking to start .. leave Lego movie alone!!
Lesson 2: Poly bags not worth the hassle
Another lesson for me was the lego poly bags I bought some of the Mario ones and the lego Minifigures, the lego Mario ones I did make some small money but the fees for selling these on Amazon were not worth it. The lego mini figures I just about broke even though selling for a lot more than paid
So the second lesson of this year was to leave these bags alone, or arguable to sell on eBayLesson 3 Wait to sell in Q4
Arguably one of the lessons I am considering is whether I should have waited until the end of the year to sell many, when prices have gone up quite a lot. Despite most of my sales being done in this time, a fair few were done much earlier in March – June
But had I not made them sales then I wouldn’t have been able to buy other discounts so for me I think was right more or less to sell when I did even though could have earned more money, just so that I could put more into the lego.
As always cash flow is king
My next step is to have a hunt out for thos Lego sets retiring in 2022 that can snap up hopefully at great discounts before they leave the shelves
